American Flag Sponge Butt Cake is a print of a realistic woman’s body revealed to be cake, in the form of an American Flag ‘sponge’ cake. This piece is from a series of surrealistic paintings of the body Beavers has made that mine the trends and attitudes of social media. Intended as a re-framing of consumption and desire within contemporary culture, the work—rendered onto a square plane that recalls Instagram posts—evokes both the hypersexualized images and food porn trends that pervade social media. In Gina Beavers’ own words, “I am trying to make paintings that embody the anxieties, pieties, shamelessness, and vulnerabilities of our lives online. Can bodies, or a painting of a body, represent these interior states?” For the hand-embellished prints in this limited edition series, the artist has arranged a set of stickers that address themes of voting and democracy which are adhered in various places on the print.

This marks ART FOR CHANGE’s second partnership with When We All Vote, a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase participation in every election and to close the race and age voting gap. In conjunction with the online exhibition, ART FOR CHANGE will donate five percent of the unframed purchase price of sales through December 1st, with a $10,000 minimum commitment, to support When We All Vote’s mission to increase voter participation in this crucial election year.

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative of supporting When We All Vote, Fernandez notes, “With the amount of voter suppression that occurs today, having a dedicated program that can provide resources, information, and acknowledgment of voter’s rights is crucial. Everyone’s voice is important, and deserves the opportunity to be heard.”
