Joshua Nazario Lugo, El Corta Plátanos (The Banana Cutter), 2026; Hand-Embellished, Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Joshua Nazario is a self-taught artist born and based in Puerto Rico. His practice celebrates the Caribbean island’s identity, through paintings that highlight its people and culture while tapping into personal memories. Using simple materials like concrete and wood, the artist transforms depictions of various symbols and objects—for instance, workers, athletes, and cars—into reflections on resilience, pride, and the value found in daily life. Nazario has presented work at galleries across Puerto Rico as well as the United States, including EMBAJADA, San Juan; PROXYCO Gallery, New York; Dinner Gallery, New York; and Charlie James Gallery, Los Angeles. He is currently the ART FOR CHANGE artist-in-residence in Santa Monica, CA.
El Corta Plátanos (The Banana Cutter) depicts a man of the namesake profession, who is seated while wielding a machete. Although his face is partially obscured by the shade provided by his hat, the primary figure wields a powerful presence within the pictorial frame—commanding space and attention through his central position. The man’s crisp, white shirt also draws contrast from the backdrop, made up of a serene blue sky and a line of homes amid scores of undulating waves. As in many of Nazario’s works, the composition pays homage to Puerto Rican heritage by featuring those who are essential to daily life on the island, in spite of being often overlooked. The artist will additionally render each print with unique, hand-embellished elements such as palm trees, mountains, or tropical fruits; other prints may include subtle elements of sports and automobiles.
