In Flowers with Plaid, Larsen expands her signature otherworldly floral still lifes, placing a lush bouquet in an ornate vessel. The composition is set against a vibrant rainbow tartan backdrop, a historic pattern long used to distinguish Scottish clans.
Each edition of Flowers with Plaid becomes truly one-of-a-kind through Larsen’s hand-embellishments. She removes select areas of the print and replaces them with pieces of Japanese handmade paper, introducing subtle variations in depth and surface texture. Larsen then adds pencil-crayon detailing throughout the composition, emphasizing color variations and botanical forms.

Caroline Larsen is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Larsen received her BA from the University of Waterloo, ON, Canada and her MFA with distinction from Pratt Institute in addition to a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Art History Education from the University of Auckland. Known for sculpting space and volume out of thick scrapings of oil paints, Larsen’s work examines class, value and signification by marrying storied decorative arts disciplines with a precise, physical technique that in fantastically vibrant palettes. Recent exhibitions include Chromatic at Over the Influence (Hong Kong, HK); A Confluence of Coastal Creativity at Mindy Solomon Gallery in collaboration with Albertz Benda (Miami, FL); and Double Vision at The Hole (New York, NY), among others.
