Danielle Orchard revisits the history of paintings and the bather motif to propose new representations of womanhood, with her signature Cubist lines. Perrotin gallery recently presented a solo presentation of new paintings by the artist at Art Basel in Miami. Galerie Magazine included Orchard in their recent article about 8 standout artworks to catch at Art Basel and noted, “All four works had sold by the end of day, with one piece going to a major institution.”

Inspired by the experience of having her first child, Orchard’s presentation revealed both the expectations of pregnancy and the reality of motherhood. “Painting for me has always been a means to observe my life and my position in the world, while also combing through art history for connections and insights into the work and lives of other artists,” Orchard tells Galerie.

In her recent limited edition print with ART FOR CHANGE, Skinny Pop, Orchard explores similar themes of the female figure.

Skinny Pop centers on a nude woman reclining in bed beside a bowl of popcorn. Gazing leftward, the subject appears expressionless as she clutches a cigarette, which emits a billowy column of smoke that partially obscures her face. The composition recalls the odalisque scenes once portrayed by eighteenth and nineteenth-century painters such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix, which project the fetishized fantasy of a female concubine. By replicating this classical pose, Orchard subverts the male gaze while also recontextualizing it within a contemporary setting. The work also demonstrates a visual interest in Analytical Cubism, an early-twentieth-century movement distinguished by the fragmentary depiction of a given subject.
