Emma Kohlmann, Tree of Life, 2021; Limited Edition Print - Framed in Brown Wood
Emma Kohlmann creates paintings, drawings, self-published books, and artist objects that reinterpret flora, fauna and mythological creatures into a symbolism of her own making. These characters and objects join one another in colorful images that result from the artist’s own stream of consciousness, defying naturalistic proportions and compositions. Born in New York City and now based in Florence, Massachusetts, she has exhibited work nationally and internationally at venues such as Jack Hanley Gallery, New York; The University of Austin, Texas; the Portland Museum of Art; MOCA Tucson; Stems, Brussels; and Kit Gallery, Tokyo.
The second of Kohlmann’s collaborations with ART FOR CHANGE, Tree of Life, portrays a surrealistic scene wherein expressive faces appear within the bright red, inner contour of the titular tree. Various living creatures—for instance, birds, butterflies and human figures—coexist on and under its branches, morphing into interchangeable entities as though to draw our attention towards the interconnectivity of the world at large. The work is emblematic of the artist’s style, defined by loose washes of ink and paint that blend together into vividly imaginative depictions. The artist has additionally embellished ten prints in this series using acrylic paint, making each print a unique work of art.
ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds to the International Rescue Committee in support of humanitarian aid in the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey for the duration of 5 Years: An Art For Change Survey on view through March 25, 2023. As in all series, the artist will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
