Tessa Perutz, NY Watercolor Series, Fort Greene Park (September 28, 2024), 2024; Original Work
Tessa Perutz’s artworks function as psychological landscapes, touring the fields and valleys of the earth as well as the inner mind. The artist considers her creations—pinpointed with anecdotes, hasty jottings, and existential ponderings—to be a testimony to spontaneous exploration. Equally shaped by intuition and conceptualization, her paintings and installations reference the depths of natural worlds and collective memory. Based in New York and Paris, Perutz has exhibited works internationally, at institutions that include The Drawing Center, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Belgium; Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, MI; and Atlanta Contemporary, GA. Additionally, her work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Fondation CAB, Brussels, Belgium, and Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France; and Verbier 3-D Foundation, Verbier, Switzerland.
Comprising thickly contoured compositions that straddle the line between figuration and abstraction, NY Watercolor Series is a body of work inspired by Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. Swatches of vibrant, technicolor hues demarcate tree branches and stumps from the surrounding environment—defined by human-made paths and planters at times, and the irregular curvatures of shrubbery at others. Perutz began creating these paintings in April 2024, as a way to refamiliarize herself with America after living and working in Belgium for many years. The artist visited the park over the course of six months, and created black ink underpaintings from life, as a way to document the subtle shifts in foliage over the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Once dried, the underpaintings were brought back to her studio, where gouache and watercolor were added to imbue the works with iridescence, depth, and lyricism.
Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support One Tree Planted, Perutz notes, “As these works were made by observing the patterns and shifts within the natural landscapes of Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park, it makes perfect sense for proceeds from their sales to go towards planting trees in urban environments. I am proud to contribute to such a focused and positive organization, which is improving the lives of countless people through greenifying their immediate surroundings.”
