Susan Chen, Just Do, 2025; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print

Susan Chen is an oil painter whose works explore themes pertaining to race, community, immigration, prejudice, identity, longing, love, and loss. Since 2020, the artist has invited over one hundred individuals into her studio, where they sit and become subjects in large-scale, community portraits. She additionally creates self-portraits, and other depictions of personal interests. Born in Hong Kong and based in New York City, Chen received a Creative Capital grant in 2025, and has presented solo exhibitions at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY; Night Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; and Meredith Rosen Gallery, New York, NY. Additionally, her works can be found in a number of esteemed collections around the world, including the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, Palm Beach, FL; and the Yuz Museum, Shanghai, China.

Depicting a vibrant bouquet situated before a crimson background, Just Do is inspired by a letter that Sol Lewitt once wrote to Eva Hesse, in which he offers advice on self-doubt, overcoming creative blocks, and being an artist; the note ends with the imperative, “Stop it and just DO.” For this work, Chen imagined Hesse waking up to a bouquet, with this letter positioned besides it. In the artist’s own words, “As we get older, we start worrying about what others might think of us, what the consequences of our actions might be, and whether we’re making the right decisions. I find that I often have to remind myself to quiet the anxiety, and ‘just DO.’ I hope this flower painting serves as a motivational reminder for my viewers as well.” For this limited edition series, Chen will imbue each print with the word 'DO' or phrases once said by a variety of modern-world heroes, and new elements rendered through acrylic or gouache paint.
