Sarah Lee, The Black Tulip, 2022; Limited Edition Print
New York-based artist Sarah Lee’s recent work engages with the mystery and wonder of winter’s night. Her experimentations with light and shape illuminate our capacity to see through absence into another world. The Black Tulip shows a deep, luminous nightscape of rich blues and sparkling highlights engaging with the spaces between nostalgic realities, dreams and the imaginaries we fill in between. The namesake tulip, hidden from light yet legible in the slight tonal variations, emphasizes the secrecy and wonder of her wintery night scenes. Rendered in her rich, varied blue palette, the moon illuminating the edges of the bare trees and light stalks of grass create an emotionally-charged, meditative composition. The artist has hand-embellished 15 prints with colored pencil and pastel details, making each piece a unique work.
ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds to the International Rescue Committee in support of humanitarian aid in the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey for the duration of 5 Years: An Art For Change Survey on view through March 25, 2023.
