Sarah Faux is a painter whose somatic work lies at the thresholds of figuration and abstraction. Created onto stretched and cut-out canvas, her paintings explore the delights and contradictions of living in a body. Born in Boston and currently based in Brooklyn, the artist has presented solo exhibitions at Hales Gallery, New York, NY; M+B, Los Angeles, CA; Capsule Shanghai, Shanghai, China; and Stems Gallery, Brussels, Belgium. She holds an MFA in Painting from Yale University, as well as a joint BA/BFA from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Additionally, Faux has been the recipient of many residencies and grants, including an Institute Residential Fellowship at the Clyfford Still Museum in 2024 and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2023.
Originally comprising two adjoining canvases—one large, and a thin counterpart that functions like the margin of a page—Sub Rosa features enigmatic streaks of color that recall a set of intertwined limbs. Crudely rendered lines appear to etch out the contours of arms and fingers, while a pool of midnight blue pigment loosely forms the partial profile of a face. The Latin title (“done in secret”) hints at Faux’s intention of depicting a covert space in which bodies break apart and reconstruct themselves. In the artist’s own words, “My work is often talked about as operating in the zone between abstraction and figuration, but I don’t find those two to be opposite. To be human is, in many ways, to be abstract; we are never fully legible, even to ourselves. So, my paintings operate in shadowy zones—private moments, hidden feelings, changing your mind. There is pleasure in letting go of concrete forms, and allowing bodies to shake off the strictures of language.”

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support the Ali Forney Center, Faux adds, “The Ali Forney Center provides a crucial lifeline for trans and LGBTQ+ youth experiencing housing instability. I am honored to be able to contribute to an organization that provides food, shelter, and healing to some of the New York community’s most vulnerable. In a moment when queer communities are under attack, the Ali Forney Center's work is more vital than ever.”
