Nick McPhail is a Los Angeles-based painter and sculptor whose work examines the peripheral mundanity of the human experience. Since relocating from Michigan to California in 2006, he has maintained a consistent practice that relies on personal observation and photography as the basis for his intuitive compositions. The artist has presented solo exhibitions at Massey Klein Gallery, New York, NY; Maybaum Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Reynolds Gallery, Richmond, VA; Amélie Maison d’Art, Paris, France; Ochi Projects, Los Angeles, CA; Untitled_1983, Geneva, Switzerland; and Holiday, Los Angeles, CA. McPhail’s work is in several public collections, including those of Morgan Stanley in New York City, Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, and Michigan State University Center for Ethics in East Lansing.
Inspired by McPhail’s graphic collage practice, Hill depicts a car driving away on a downward sloping road. The grey asphalt appears distinct from the rest of the composition, bisecting the image so that viewers are only clued in on what resides in the near distance. Meanwhile, the gradient sky nods towards the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio de Chirico, while also capturing the hazy glow that often washes over Los Angeles. McPhail notes, “I am interested in how color can simultaneously describe reality and destabilize it, creating a sense of familiarity that feels slightly suspended or emotionally charged. Much of my work explores the tension between realism and abstraction, presence and absence, as well as the way that contemporary life is filtered through images and remembered fragments.” For this limited edition series, the artist will breathe new life into ten unique prints by repainting various details with acrylic paint. In addition, he will cut sections from other paintings on paper and attach them to the prints, introducing a new collage element.

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support the Ali Forney Center, McPhail adds, “The story of Ali Forney is tragic, and it’s incredible that something so good has come out of it. It is important that unhoused LGBTQ+ teens have a place they can go to for resources, help, guidance, and a community that looks out for them. These kinds of programs obviously need a ton of support, and I hope that this partnership with ART FOR CHANGE will not only bring them extra financial support, but also more exposure to others. What the Ali Forney Center is doing is amazing, and I am so happy that I am able to use my artwork to help its program.”
