Morgan Blair creates paintings that exist in a realm of quasi abstraction and digital aesthetics. Often taking inspiration from claymation, her bold and graphic works appear multi-dimensional, seeming as though they are made up of sculpted layers. Born in Worcester, MA and based in Queens, NY, the artist has presented work at venues that include The Hole, New York, NY; Harper’s, East Hampton, NY; The Journal Gallery, New York, NY; Kasmin, New York, NY; Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago, IL; and Andrew Rafacz, Chicago, IL. Blair has additionally painted large-scale murals in Heerlen, Netherlands; Worcester, MA; Montauk, NY; Brooklyn, NY; Sharon, CT; Los Angeles, CA; and Atlanta, GA. She also creates artist-edition jigsaw puzzles by hand-cutting wood. 

In support of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative of supporting When We All Vote, Blair has created a trio of original works, each distinguished by a play between alternating, distorted shapes. The artist first transformed shredded bills and scrap paper into pigmented clay and pulp, which became the basis for textured surfaces. Hard-edged, taped-off acrylic gradients were then layered atop one another, creating dynamic compositions defined by clashing space and color. Darkened areas appear within the pictorial frames, like mysterious shadows cast by unseen objects. Though intentionally obscured in translation, these interlocking forms reference elements of children’s still lives, claymations, and dioramas.

Of this series, Blair notes, “I'm happy to contribute towards When We All Vote’s mission to combat voter suppression and to increase civic education towards the goal of electing effective leadership. We need people in office who are dedicated to upholding our basic rights, and who will advocate tirelessly for marginalized groups whose rights are increasingly being stripped away."
