New York-based artist Maggie Ellis (b. 1991, Atlanta, Georgia) is a painter of surreal memories, laughter and life. Her work is born of the fleeting, humorous moments of voyeurism she witnesses throughout New York City and informed by her upbringing in the rural South. A rebellion against tradition and expectation, Ellis weaves the uncanny and taboo through the mundanity of daily life. She received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2014, and her MFA from Hunter College in 2017. In the same year, she also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Recent exhibitions include: Through a Glass Darkly, Carl Kostyal, Milan, and Strange Strangers at Charles Moffett, New York.

Maggie EllisCold Couple was inspired by the eccentricities of mid-winter, outdoor dining scenarios in the post-lockdown city. Blue figures seated in supportive embrace huddle around a precarious cafe table sharing a latte. They look up and out of the canvas, gazing through the viewer with a wide, longing stare for disparate desires. The man’s comical legs stretch out beyond the table, his burgundy pants riding up and cutting off above the ankle. The flimsy table rattles beneath his knees, vibrating with her chills in rhythm with the waves in the tepid cup. An analogue to the frailty of some pandemic pods, any impending spills pale in comparison to what we can imagine lies beyond this moment. For the hand-embellished portion of the edition, the artist has hand-embellished the prints with acrylic details in the latte art, making each piece a unique work.

“As this country moves backwards, we have an urgent need to protect women,” says Ellis on the collaboration. “Having the right to abortion access means having control over your own body. In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling, it’s more important now than ever to support initiatives like Planned Parenthood Greater New  York, which provide abortion access, birth control, health services, and support to women.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds to Planned Parenthood Greater New York in support of the fight for reproductive justice across the country. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of net proceeds from print sales.
