Kour Pour, Coy Tiger (Blue & Navy), 2022; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Kour Pour (b. 1987, Exeter, England) is a British-Iranian artist based in Los Angeles investigating his experience of living between cultures. Pour’s visually complex paintings, prints, sculptures and collages draw upon non-Western craft and decorative traditions in a meditation on global exchange, identity and migration. Persian rug motifs and patterns frequently populate the artist’s work in a nod to the displacement and transitions experienced by migrant communities throughout the western world. The artist received his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Recent exhibitions include New Homes, New Places at Gallery 1957 (London, UK); Familiar Spirits at Kavi Gupta (Chicago, IL); Wild Garden at Sargent’s Daughters (New York, NY); and A Boundless Drop to a Boundless Ocean at the Orlando Museum of Art (Orlando, FL) among others. The artist’s work has been featured in a number of publications including the Financial Times, Cultured, LA Weekly, and Hyperallergic among others.
In celebration of the Year of the Tiger, Coy Tiger (Blue & Navy) is the newest, delightful series of hand-embellished block prints from Kour Pour. In the vein of the Bauhaus School and early European Modernists, Pour shows off his keen sense of color and space in a set of compelling combinations in vibrant hues that toy with the edge of nature and artifice. Pour’s tiger comes alive with swirls of stripes, piercing eyes and a full, whimsical smirk as if in the middle of a laugh. Symbolizing strength, bravery and fierce independence in the Chinese Zodiac, while the tiger may have placed third in the mythical, celestial race, it is at the top of our hearts in Pour’s playful rendition of this powerful feline. The artist has printed and embellished these works by hand, making each piece unique.
“I’m happy to take part in my third collaboration with Art for Change. To date, we have been able to support The Center for Human Rights in Iran, a cause that is extremely personal to me and more urgent than ever given the current situation in Iran, as well as Little Wanderers NYC, a cat rescue organization performing important work saving cats in need,” shared Pour on the collaboration. “With this new series of prints, 10 trees will be planted for every print sold to help combat climate change through reforestation efforts. Tigers have become endangered in part because of deforestation, and I am excited that this project will help address the issue.”
ART FOR CHANGE will plant ten trees for each print sold, in support of global reforestation efforts. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
