Shona McAndrew, Kaguya, 2021; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Shona McAndrew is known for paintings and sculptures that depict women in their personal spaces. Drawing from a variety of historical and personal references, she renders fleeting yet intimate moments of vulnerability in the daily lives of women seldom portrayed in art history. Born in Paris and now based in Philadelphia, McAndrew has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at Art Omi, Ghent; CHART, New York; Stems Gallery, Brussels; and Taymour Grahne Gallery, London; among many others.
Rendered in the artist’s trademark stye, “Kaguya” is an intimate portrait of model and artist P. S. Kaguya. The painting functions as not only an active rebuttal to the conventional beauty standards peddled by mass media, but also as a celebration of the physical and intellectual idiosyncrasies that every woman should revel in. Clad in her undergarments, the subject appears entirely confident in her own skin. McAndrew’s image is further distinguished by its masterfully painted details, from the wood grain of the wainscoting to the tea bag logo that hangs over the side of a mug.
