Jeanine Brito, The evening’s affairs leave her bereft, 2023; Limited Edition Print
Jeanine Brito is a painter who creates autobiographical explorations of memory and desire, while employing a visual language informed by surrealism, theater, fairy tales and folklore. Born in Germany and currently based in Canada, the self-taught artist begins her process by first establishing basic compositions on thumbnail sketches, before moving onto canvases where she builds form by layering thin layers of acrylic paint. Often combining shades of red, green and blue, Brito—tapping into her past experience in graphic design, a field in which smooth, saturated surfaces meet photographic crops—selects her colors intuitively. The artist has recently exhibited at Nicodim New York and Los Angeles, La Causa Galeria, Madrid, and Huxley Parlour, London.
The evening’s affairs leave her bereft stems from a new series based on an original fairy tale imagined by Brito, wherein each painting portrays a specific scene as though it were in a ballet or opera production. Drawing heavily on classic grotesque stories, set design, costuming and antique toy theaters, this particular work depicts a self-referential subject, seen waltzing with a male character across a ballroom setting distinguished by a resplendent red curtain and a checkered floor. The protagonist gazes towards her dance partner, a prince. He removes one of her gloves as they dance as an act of flirtation, but the gesture causes apprehension. Ten prints in the edition are hand embellished by the artist, who has used acrylic paint to add additional details to her dress including flowers, bows, and other ornaments.

Of this series benefiting the Ali Forney Center, Brito notes, “I strongly believe in the Ali Forney Center’s comprehensive approach to supporting homeless LGBTQ+ youth, which is so important—particularly in this political moment. It’s life-changing, vital work.”
ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds from each print sold to the Ali Forney Center in support of the organization’s programs that save the lives of LGBTQ+ young people, protecting them from the harms of homelessness and empower them with the tools needed to live independently. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
