Throughout his intimate, intuitive paintings, Jammie Holmes presents poignant scenes of Black communities and traditions in the American South. Born in Thibodaux, LA and based in Dallas, TX, the self-taught artist draws on personal memory to capture moments of both celebration and struggle. Incorporating portraiture, symbolism, and written text into his work, Holmes intersperses reflections on social, cultural, and political concerns with meditations on notions of family, home, and Blackness. In addition to being the subject of a solo exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX in 2023, his works are included in esteemed permanent collections that include the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, D.C.; the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Lansing, MI; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Pérez Art Museum Miami, FL; and X Museum, Beijing, China.
A regal portrait of Holmes’s Doberman Pinscher, Tyson captures the namesake dog in an honest, humanizing way. The beloved companion is depicted in a regal setting—distinguished by ornate wallpaper as well as a Pan-African flag housed in a gilded frame—that conveys his significance and status within the artist’s life. Imbued with the same emotional weight and presence that a person might carry, Tyson gazes forward as though to forge a deep, intimate connection with the viewer. Regarding his general practice, the artist notes, “My work is about bringing everyday people—especially those from my culture—into the future. I want my paintings to reflect what life really looks like now so that, in the future, people can see who we were. I’m not just painting portraits; I’m painting emotion, humanity, and presence. Much of my work isn’t meant to be seen, so much as felt.” For this limited edition series, each print features gold leaf elements that add dimension and richness.

As part of ART FOR CHANGE’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and charitable giving, we will plant 10 trees for each artwork sold. The artist is eager to participate in ART FOR CHANGE’s efforts to support reforestation efforts, as he views trees as living time stamps that bear witness to history. Having grown up in southern Louisiana, he has seen firsthand how environmental harm impacts local communities. For Holmes, reforestation isn’t only an ecological cause; it is also cultural and deeply personal.
