Born in Florida and raised in Maryland, Jamaal Peterman is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Peterman holds a BFA from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2014) and an MFA from Pratt Institute (2019). His work investigates the impact of social and physical structures on perception of race and identity—using scale and line in his figurative compositions to illustrate hierarchy and restriction. Recent exhibitions include Tales from the Hood at James Fuentes Gallery (New York, NY) and Abstraction and Social Critique at Kavi Gupta Gallery (Chicago, IL) among others. Peterman has been awarded the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant, commissioned by MoMA PS1, and has undertaken residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, MASS MoCA, Wassaic Project Residency, and Fountainhead Residency, amongst others. The artist’s work has been featured in numerous publications including Art in America and New American Painting.

30 for 30 is a reflection of a pandemic tradition Peterman began for his thirtieth birthday, running one mile for each year of his life. The 30-mile run through the once lively streets in a time of such immense panic and uncertainty deeply transformed the artist’s understanding of transitional landscapes and communities. Using sharp gridded lines woven through the geometric, stark landscape, the shadowed figure charges into the background, ensconced in color and shading that emerges from the flat setting. The artist hand-embellished the edition with details in vinyl.

My work has always been about enriching the community and its development of social equality—bringing access to information and broadening perspectives on social norms and market exploitation,” commented Peterman on the collaboration. “Working with Project Healthy Minds to help build a stronger mental health ecosystem in my community helps me hold my practice to higher expectations, engaging more deeply with codes that underlying many social issues while bolstering the foundational resources in my community.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds from each print sold to Project Healthy Mind in support of the organization’s initiatives to provide mental health care and services to our most vulnerable communities. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
