Natalia Nakazawa, Visual Heteroglossia: Infinite Flooding, Infinite Burning, 2021; Limited Edition Print

Natalia Nakazawa is a Queens-based, interdisciplinary artist working across the mediums of painting, textiles and social practice. Her woven tapestries, painted panels and works on paper serve as accumulation points for materials culled from the past, present, and future. The artist received her MFA from the California College of the Arts, and has exhibited work at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Honolulu Biennial, Honolulu; CUE Art Foundation, New York; and The Arlington Arts Center, Washington, D.C.; among many others. 

Infinite Flooding, Infinite Burning stems from Nakazawa’s Visual Heteroglossia series, which explores the orthographic and architectural configurations often found in manuscript and Persian miniature paintings. These frameworks depart from the Western one-point perspective, allowing viewers to place themselves at a variety of scales and locations. Heteroglossia, developed by the literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, defines the presence of different types of speech and perspectives as the driving force behind a powerful story. Harnessing these ideas, Nakazawa brings together disparate elements of her daily life, which are rendered in the form of photographic transfers, textiles, hyper-pigmented acrylic inks, and hand-laid gems.  Nakazawa has hand-embellished each print with gold leaf and chine-colle.

Of this series benefitting Destination Tomorrow, she notes, “Everyone needs somewhere they can go to be heard and to get support. It's important that Destination Tomorrow provides access to supportive resources and services for the LGBTQ community in the Bronx. I am moved by the way that they approach economic, social, and mental empowerment through a variety of holistic educational, financial, support-based, housing, and health programs.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate 20% of the net proceeds of each edition to Destination Tomorrow. This limited series is part of AFC’s Changemakers collaboration with Danny Báez.
