Xiao Wang is a Chinese painter based in Brooklyn, NY. Wang received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Glasgow School of Art (Scotland, UK) and an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. A figurative painter known for deep, iridescent, moody color palettes, his compositions marry classical figuration and techniques with a markedly contemporary use of layering and shadows. Engaging with social and personal themes, the artist collages abstracted figures against flat layers of realist natural forms in sharp, contrasting colors. Wang’s work has been featured in a number of publications including Artnet, Juxtapoz Magazine, and New American Paintings. Recent exhibitions include Liminal Blue at Deanna Evans Project (New York, NY); What Now? At PM/AM (London, UK); and Mixed Feelings at F2T Gallery (Milan, IT).

Ghost/Fire depicts a bouquet in a ceramic vase bursting into flames, lit by the light emanating from a lunar eclipse and a pink glow rising from below the horizon. Wang delineates the relationship between the subject and viewer through first person perspective, our arms reaching out across the table toward the vase. This work was inspired by the impact of family stories on one’s psyche, where shared histories and internalized darkness can reduce even the most beautiful and lively to dust. The artist has hand-embellished each work in the edition with acrylic glazes and gloss to make flowers more vibrant along with additional leaves and buds, making each piece a unique work.
