Gina Beavers creates photorealist paintings that mimic images appropriated, collaged and constructed from the internet and social media. The artist is known for building thick layers of paint atop one another, as a way of imbuing flat digital photographs with tactile three-dimensionality. Born in Greece, she has presented work in solo exhibitions at venues such as MoMA PS1, Marianne Boesky Gallery, Various Small Fires and Michael Benevento, among others. Her work is also included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; the Jorge M. Perez Collection; and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Florescent Lip derives from an ongoing series that takes inspiration from the video makeup tutorials that have been popularized by social media. The painting is a reflection of the self-creation aspects of our online space, and falls in line with Beavers’s wider artistic practice, which aims to capture and to understand the anxiety and humor of the world that we inhabit.

Of this series, she notes, “I'm very excited to raise money for GrowNYC, because the connection between local farmers and the city-dwellers they nurture through fresh food is so important. I also love the work they do to engage children to be stewards of the environment. It is so crucial, and very close to my heart as a one-time New York City teacher.”
