Enoc Perez is a critically acclaimed artist, best known for paintings of modernist buildings which he began creating during the 1990s. These compositions employ a technique that recalls printmaking traditions—in which preparatory drawings, based on both original photographs and popular reproductions, are applied with oil sticks and pressed onto canvas surfaces. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and based in New York, NY, Perez has presented solo exhibitions at venues that include Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, TX; UTA Artist Space, Los Angeles, CA; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL. Additionally, his work can be found in the esteemed collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; the British Museum, London, United Kingdom; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, San Juan, PR; and the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; among others.

Untitled III derives from a body of work inspired by images originally captured to promote tourism in Puerto Rico. The composition offers a distanced view of a swimming pool framed by white and yellow striped umbrellas, while a palm tree provides shade from the sunny skies beyond. Throughout the image, brushstrokes are loosely rendered and layered, as though to insinuate the gentle sway of an ocean breeze. In Perez’s own words, “My work is me, my loves, my fears, and my wonder. I make paintings because painting is the most direct way in which I can make sense of everything. I feel that the Caribbean is mine, so I paint it. It is out of a search for myself, and it’s also out of love.” For this limited edition series, the artist will draw unique elements on each print with Caran D’Ache crayons, as a way of stretching the possibility of the images.
