Emma Kohlmann, Being and Being Held, 2023; Limited Edition Print
Emma Kohlmann (b. 1989 in the Bronx, NY) lives and works in Florence, MA. She received her B.A. from Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including solo exhibitions at Jack Hanley Gallery (New York, NY); V1 Gallery (New York, NY); Nationale (Portland, OR); Kit Gallery (Tokyo, JP) and more. Her work has been featured in Artnews, The Cut, The Telegraph, and The Creative Independent, among other publications.
Being and Being Held is the artist’s third collaboration with ART FOR CHANGE. A double entendre—a mirrored self, two figures embrace one another in rich red and green jewel tones. “Being” takes on name and action, serving as a reminder for what both the self and others can provide. In her characteristically lush and naturalist style, these enigmatic portraits portray an intimately earnest encounter between both the figures and the viewer. The artist has hand-embellished 15 prints in the edition with details in acrylic paint, making each a unique work.
