Danielle Orchard, 3 Women, 2025; Hand-Embellished, Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Nodding to the great painters of the modern era, Danielle Orchard’s paintings often portray female nudes who replicate art historical tropes while performing contemporary leisure activities. These portraits direct attention towards subjects’ facial expressions and body language, as a way of encouraging viewers to consider their interiority. In the artist’s own words, “My work is a kind of autofiction that combines various art historical references—typically those involving familiar female narratives—with my own life experience. My aim is to continue a certain painting lineage on a formal level, while also reconsidering some of the one-dimensional depictions of women and their place in the world.” Orchard’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at galleries around the world, and can be found in the public collections of Marquez Art Projects, Miami, FL; Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL; the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.
A play on concealment, 3 Women depicts three sunbathers whose identities are obscured in various ways. One figure’s face is shielded by a plume of cigarette smoke, while another is turned away from the viewer; the third subject is entirely unseen—her presence only insinuated by a discarded bikini that also suggests her nakedness. The composition riffs on the ancient Greek story of the goddess Diana, who is stumbled upon naked by a mortal man named Actaeon while bathing with other nymphs. The tale recurs throughout paintings dated from the Renaissance to the present day, having been depicted by artists that range from Titian to Camille Corot. For this limited edition series, Orchard will render each print unique by adding hand-drawn objects such as fruit, wine glasses, and beer bottles, with a variety of mediums that include wax crayons, watercolor pencils, and pastel.
