Cassi Namoda, Sad Maria Reads Pessoa, 2019; Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Influenced by Chagall, Cassi Namoda poetically suspends María’s weeping body in the center of the frame while large swathes of magenta and electric purple feverishly warp and twist in the background. A hovel lit by a single faintly flickering candle vibrates as violent onyx armory, half of a red heart, and the name of modernist Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa loom over María. The objects oppressively descend upon her frame as a bloated bottle of wine sits on her parted lips while her left arm feebly raises a white handkerchief admitting surrender. Namoda’s unique pictorial language expresses the duality of identity and place; imbuing her multifaceted characters with a heightened level of agency and deference. With dream-like elements and folkloric references, her work calls forth an evocative and intimate recollection.
Cassi Namoda was named one of 9 emerging Los Angeles artists to watch in 2019 by Artnet News. Namoda’s work was acquired by the Perez Art Museum Miami in 2018.
