Caroline Larsen, Flowers with Plaid Version 1, 2022; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Caroline Larsen is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Larsen received her BA from the University of Waterloo, ON, Canada and her MFA with distinction from Pratt Institute in addition to a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Art History Education from the University of Auckland. Known for sculpting space and volume out of thick scrapings of oil paints, Larsen’s work examines class, value and signification by marrying storied decorative arts disciplines with a precise, physical technique that in fantastically vibrant palettes. Recent exhibitions include Chromatic at Over the Influence (Hong Kong, HK); A Confluence of Coastal Creativity at Mindy Solomon Gallery in collaboration with Albertz Benda (Miami, FL); and Double Vision at The Hole (New York, NY), among others.
In Flowers with Plaid, Larsen builds upon her robust practice of otherworldly floral still lifes in elaborate faience, a style of French earthenware produced from the sixteenth through the end of the eighteenth century that gained popularity during the Art Deco period. The sprawling bouquet is situated against a rich, rainbow tartan background, a storied pattern that emerged to distinguish Scottish clans from one another. Inspired by pointilism, the artist has inverted her characteristic mark making toward a pared back, glistening, technicolor rendering where sharp shadows, fine lines, and speckled detailing recede into shadows and vibrant highlights bubble over the curving petals. The artist has hand-embellished each print in the edition with colored pencil, Japanese paper, and acrylic paint making each work unique.
ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds from each print sold to Project Healthy Mind in support of the organization’s initiatives to provide mental health care and services to our most vulnerable communities. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
