Amy Lincoln, Blue and Orange Seascape, 2021; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Amy Lincoln is known for depicting dream-like scenes of imagined landscapes, atmospheric activity and vibrant, fantastical foliage. Inspired by folk art and the practices of painters such as Henri Rousseau and Ivan Rabuzin, the artist is particularly interested in earthly entities that lack concrete form—for instance, clouds, water, light and air. Within her work, these subject matters become dynamic playing fields for graphic patterns and chromatic striations. Lincoln’s work is the subject of a solo exhibition at Sperone Westwater in September 2021, and has also previously been shown at venues such as Taymour Grahne Projects, Sargent’s Daughters and Regina Rex, among others.
Blue and Orange Seascape is a colorful study of a sun rising above the horizon, casting an effervescent glow on the surrounding sky and water. Motivated by the idea that every bit of matter can refract light and appear in any possible color, Lincoln transitions between one hue to another in a way that creates a prismatic illusion of expansive space. Every pocket of her painted surface is distinguished by undulating and gradient shapes that come together to form an image that feels simultaneously figurative and abstract.
