Angela Fang Zirbes
’s paintings tap into the feelings of isolation, detachment and uncertainty that she has felt as a biracial woman who grew up in the American Midwest. The artist applies airbrushed acrylic onto raw canvas, creating a soft, velvety texture that contrasts with the unsettling content of her work. Inspired by personal memories, recurring dreams and found imagery, Fang Zirbes’s practice navigates the juxtapositions between the seen and the hidden, light and shadow, reality and memory. Based in New York and Iowa, she received her BFA from the Parsons School of Design in 2023. She is represented by Hashimoto Contemporary (Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco).

For this series, the artist will create a suite of original paintings, each conceptually set within an old rural house that replicates the architectural spaces of Fang Zirbes’s childhood. Throughout these works, repeated motifs—familiar objects, patterns and entities depicted in subtly altered forms and contexts—coexist with one another. Seen through a skewed perspective, subjects appear to be suspended in a sense of peril, as though they have been intruded on by an unwelcome voyeur. In the artist’s own words, “I am interested in portraying the sort of déjà vu that comes with recalling memories and dreams. I render this uncanniness through painting unusual domestic scenes that are caught in a tense moment before some unknown danger.”

Everyone should have equal opportunities and access to participate in our democracy, and to vote for the representatives who will create the change that they want to see.”
