Alteronce Gumby is known for paintings that trace their origins to his interest in the cosmos; the cultural and historical significance of color; and disparate art movements. An active member of the Amateur Astronomers Association and the Planetary Society, the artist also works across ceramics, installation, performance, and film. Born in Pennsylvania and based in New York, he earned his BFA from Hunter College, and his MFA from the Yale School of Art. Gumby’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Allentown Art Museum, Allentown, PA; Nicola Vassell Gallery, New York, NY; and parrasch heijnen, Los Angeles, CA. It is additionally in the public collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.

A complex arrangement of agates and glass shards that produce different hues, values and energies, Make Freedom Real stems from Gumby’s ongoing examination of light, its properties, and media. Part of a larger series inspired in part by Monet’s Water Lilies and the images captured by NASA’s James Webb telescope, the abstract work is what the artist refers to as a “tonal painting.” In his own words, “Reflection is a property of light, but it is also a method of examining one’s environment and self. Each painting, composed of countless tiny prisms, slows and bends light as it travels from the density of air to glass. The visual opulence created by these elements is not only a testament to the ways in which color manifests, but the visible and invisible forces at work in our world and beyond.”
