Aliza Nisenbaum’s paintings foreground various social groups that include immigrant communities, members of grassroots organizations, and workers from the healthcare and transportation sectors. The artist collaborates with her subjects through lengthy engagements, which give way to a deepened understanding of their individual and collective histories. This knowledge becomes the basis for portraits that render close observation and patient listening as political acts. Born in Mexico City and based in New York, Nisenbaum has presented solo and two-person exhibitions at the Barack Obama Presidential Center, Chicago, IL; Metropolitan Opera, New York, NY; Queens Museum, New York, NY; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; and Tate Liverpool, United Kingdom; among many others. Her work is in the permanent collections of institutions that include the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. 

Inspired by a bouquet of flowers that Nisenbaum once saw at a dinner party, Blue Thistle—though representational—exercises an experimentation in both scale and abstraction. The artist blew up the scale of the flowers, which spring blue, purple, and white petals that pop against a moody, stark background. These petals are further distinguished with small streaks and dots of color that provide great texture and detail. Meanwhile, the flowers cast loose, greyish shadows which appear to dance and dissipate on the striped tablecloth beneath the translucent glass vase. Through this work, Nisenbaum recalls the artistic practice of her mother, who created still-life paintings inspired by Mexico City's flower markets.
