Gina Beavers creates paintings and installations inspired by photos culled from the internet and social media. Rendered in high acrylic relief, her works have taken body painting, food snapshots, makeup tutorials, memes, and bodybuilder selfies as points of departure. Born in Athens, Greece and currently based in Orange, NJ, the artist has presented solo exhibitions at venues that include MoMA PS1, New York, NY; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY; Carl Kostyál, Stockholm, Sweden, and London, United Kingdom; Michael Benevento, Los Angeles, CA; and Various Small Fires, Seoul, Korea. Additionally, Beavers’s works are included in the esteemed collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; among others.

American Flag Sponge Butt Cake is a print of a realistic woman’s body revealed to be cake, in the form of an American Flag ‘sponge’ cake. This piece is from a series of surrealistic paintings of the body Beavers has made that mine the trends and attitudes of social media. Intended as a re-framing of consumption and desire within contemporary culture, the work—rendered onto a square plane that recalls Instagram posts—evokes both the hypersexualized images and food porn trends that pervade social media. In Beavers’s own words, “I am trying to make paintings that embody the anxieties, pieties, shamelessness, and vulnerabilities of our lives online. Can bodies, or a painting of a body, represent these interior states?” For the hand-embellished prints in this limited edition series, the artist has arranged a set of stickers that address themes of voting and democracy which are adhered in various places on the print.

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative of supporting When We All Vote, she additionally notes, “The concept of democracy is at a fragile juncture, with some groups denying election results and others abstaining from voting. It's easy to overlook the importance of voting, a right that many citizens of the world do not have. We can't have a true democracy in this country until as many people as possible weigh in, so removing barriers to voting and making it as easy as possible for everyone to vote is really important to me.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate five percent of the unframed purchase price of sales through December 1st, with a $10,000 minimum commitment, to support When We All Vote’s mission to increase voter participation in this crucial election year.
