Caleb Hahne Quintana, A Place Only We Know, 2021; Limited Edition Print Framed in White Wood

Brooklyn-based artist Caleb Hahne transforms mental images and saved iPhone photographs into drawings that function as personal diary entries. These works on paper then become the points of origin for introspective paintings that encapsulate elusive memories. Hahne received his BFA from the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver as well as the New Museum in collaboration with Adidas. 

A Place Only We Know is inspired by a specific location on Oregon’s Sauvie Island, a destination which he travels to annually. Accessible by way of a rough trail created by him and his friends, the locale—lovingly recalled as a special slice of heaven—appears often within Hahne’s paintings. The image, wherein a softly lit figure traverses a path in the midst of slanting raindrops, projects serenity and bliss. On the hand-embellished prints within this limited edition series, Hahne Quintana has additionally layered on colored pencil and wax pastel markings, changing the hues of the skies depicted in order to project varying moods and tones. 

Of this benefit series, he remarks, “I think that it is especially important to create a safe and inclusive community around identity for young people. Places like The Rainbow Umbrella Program help create a safe space for teenagers’ developing years and growing pains. Giving back to a community that is looking out for everyone is the least that I could do.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds to the International Rescue Committee in support of humanitarian aid in the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Syria and Turkey for the duration of 5 Years: An Art For Change Survey on view through March 25, 2023. As in all series, the artist will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
