Omar Velazquez
Omar Velazquez was born in Isabela, Puerto Rico in 1984. He is now based between Puerto Rico and Chicago. He obtained a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Puerto Rico and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago.
His works revisits the history of painting, sculpture and music from the island, feeding a centrifugal inquiry on the politicization of the Puerto Rican identity.
He has been awarded for contemporary art and cultural institutions such as MassMOCA residency 2020. His latest solo projects include Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago (2021) and Miracle Fruit was presented at Corbett vs Dempsey Gallery Chicago IL (2019). Photo Credit: Javier Romero.
