Summer Wheat's pictorial compositions celebrate female energy in life and labor.  In contrast to how female bathers have been pictured throughout art history, Wheat aims to offer an alternative point of view as seen in Shallow Water I.  The figures, motifs, and themes of labor depicted in her work resolve to rewrite historical imagery with women at the forefront where traditionally only men were present. Wheat notes, "I wanted to make work where women did the heavy lifting and were running things.  I felt empowered to reimagine our historical images and tell a different story".

Wheat's work is influenced by the Native American culture she experienced near her childhood home in Oklahoma City.  Additional influences include dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, Willem DeKooning and reliefs created by ancient Egyptians.
