Jammie Holmes

Throughout his intimate, intuitive paintings, Jammie Holmes presents poignant scenes of Black communities and traditions in the American South. Born in Thibodaux, LA and based in Dallas, TX, the self-taught artist draws on personal memory to capture moments of both celebration and struggle. Incorporating portraiture, symbolism, and written text into his work, Holmes intersperses reflections on social, cultural, and political concerns with meditations on notions of family, home, and Blackness. In addition to being the subject of a solo exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX in 2023, his works are included in esteemed permanent collections that include the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, D.C.; the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Lansing, MI; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Pérez Art Museum Miami, FL; and X Museum, Beijing, China.
