Madeleine Bialke, Time Traveler, 2023; Limited Edition Print
Madeleine Bialke (b. 1991, Elmira, NY) is a New York-based painter whose evocative, technicolor landscapes unfurl the personal and psychological effects of the climate crisis. The artist received her MFA in 2016 from Boston University and her BFA from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2013. Bialke has been the subject of solo exhibitions at numerous galleries including Newchild Gallery (Antwerp, BE); Steve Turner Gallery (Los Angeles, CA); Harper’s Books (Easthampton, NY); and Huxley-Parlour Gallery (London, UK), among others. Her work has been featured in a breadth of publications including Artnet, The Boston Globe, Brooklyn Rail, ELEPHANT, n+1, Oxford American and New American Paintings.
In Bialke’s Time Traveler, red highlights in the artist’s Los Angeles landscape shape swathes of leaves and branches in a breezy silhouette lit by a violent magenta moon. A city in a desert stretching along the Pacific Coast, the trees are time travelers, weathering extremes manufactured by human temerity with increasingly destabilized resilience. Billowing grey bushes, reminiscent of clouds of dust, ensconce the mid-foreground, pushing against the viewer’s frame. The heat sweeps through the landscape in a vigorous slice of motion, stripping branches reaching toward the ocean bare—silhouetted by an effervescent coastline. The artist has hand-embellished each print in the edition with vibrant colorways representing the passage of time, from day to night, season to season, in rich, luminescent palettes that present excellent examples of the artist’s signature style.

“I'm so thrilled to work with ART FOR CHANGE again with this print. I've always been invested in the climate crisis, starting when it was called 'global warming' and my feelings have only deepened since I was a kid,” shared Bialke on the collaboration. ”I was so grateful to work with Jeanne Masel in 2019 on a solo show at Harper's Gallery and to continue working on this reforestation initiative. Glad to be a part of a great project!”
In support of global reforestation, ten trees will be planted for each print sale of works in this series commissioned on the occasion of EXPO CHICAGO 2023. The artist will also receive 50% of net proceeds from each sale.
