Hyegyeong G Choi’s winding painting practice engages social expectations, body image, identity and tension. Her figures wax and wane between desire and disgust. The artist’s vibrant visual world compounds feelings of perversion and consumption through thickened impasto figures and a variety of textures and techniques.

Ophelia, Quieter and Colder engages the classic character and John Everett Millais’s famous composition, shifting the perspective to a direct view rather than observing from the side of the riverbank. In this new angle, the heroine is increasingly confrontational yet deific. Depth is abstracted with swells of green and blue fauna creeping from the edges of the work. Ophelia maintains her power, refuting weakness and creating beauty in the wake of trauma and loss. The artist has hand-embellished each print, adding freckles, foliage and other distinct details making each work an original piece.

ART FOR CHANGE will plant ten trees for each work sold in support of global reforestation efforts. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of sales.
