Hein Koh is an artist who received her M.F.A. in painting from Yale University and currently lives and works in Brooklyn.  Her work has been reviewed or featured in Artforum, ArtNews, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, among other publications.  She has had solo exhibitions at Anton Kern Gallery (New York, NY); Semiose Galerie (Paris, FR); and the Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art (Savannah, GA).

The artist populates her sculptural installations, paintings and drawings with anthropomorphic flora and vegetables that communicate complex emotions. The Swimmer takes Koh’s characteristic Broccoli woman figure into the ocean in this stimulating composition. Chained to a wrecking ball pulling the Broccoli towards the bottom of the ocean, the figure, with her pointed red nails, flails her arms and legs.
The vigorous blue and white strokes splashing across the horizon animate her struggle against the current dragging her under the crest of the waves. Exploring themes of escapism and irony, the vegetable protagonist is helpless against the weight of the sinking shackle. The artist has hand-embellished 15 prints in the edition with details in oil pastel, making each hand-embellished print a unique work.

“Supporting Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is extremely important to me during such a dark, political time.  Women are losing the rights to their own bodies, and it is critical that we fight back to regain that agency” says Koh on the collaboration.  "After this, who knows what will be next?  I'm extremely saddened and shocked by recent political events, but Planned Parenthood Greater New York has been a solid rock in the fight for women's reproductive rights and support for them is crucial."

ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds to Planned Parenthood Greater New York in support of the fight for reproductive justice across the country. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of net proceeds from print sales.
