Long Island born, St. Louis-based artist Marisa Adesman produces surreal and thought-provoking paintings of everyday objects in unexpected contexts and striking states. Adesman earned her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis before completing an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Upcoming and recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at KMAC Museum (Louisville, KY), a solo presentation at EXPO Chicago (Chicago, IL), Folklore at Anat Ebgi Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), and A Few Small Nips at Mrs. Gallery (Maspeth, NY). Her work has been featured in numerous publications including The Art Newspaper, The Boston Globe, and Juxtapoz Magazine.

Shadow of a Doubt is a quintessential example of Adesman’s recent works, which surrealistically reimagine domestic scenes from tabletops to the kitchen sink. The artist integrates Enlightenment period themes -- where magic and skepticism battle materiality and reason. Perhaps most notably, Adesman has included a prominent nod to Joseph Wright of Derby’s painting An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768) in the painted mosaic peeking out from behind the blue curtain. Other details such as wisping smoke, the curled edges of drying flower petals, or a looming fork’s bleeding refraction draw viewers into the fantasy and challenge our perceptions of reality. Adesman leaves us wondering -- why is the mosaic figure averting her gazing? What is mysteriously swirling around in the wine? Who or what has been scratching the edge of the table? For now, these answers only exist in this artist’s playful mind. Offering some hints, she has hand-embellished a portion of the edition in gouache and colored pencil, making each print a unique work of its own.

“I firmly believe in Project Healthy Mind’s mission to erase the stigma surrounding mental health and to facilitate open conversations about the challenges our society faces today,” shared Adesman regarding the collaboration. “Having good mental health is essential for living a happy and fulfilling life, and having a creative practice is just one part of the healing journey. Practicing creativity not only enriches and deepens our relationship to ourselves, but allows us to be more empathetic and caring individuals.”

ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds from each print sold to Project Healthy Mind in support of the organization’s initiatives to provide mental health care and services to our most vulnerable communities. As in all series, artists will receive 50% of the net proceeds of print sales.
