As an artist interested in environmental preservation, Omar Velazquez’s vibrant paintings explore the relationships between landscape and built environments, music and folklore, and both personal and spiritual concerns, such as Taíno Indigenous beliefs and memories, informed by his Puerto Rican heritage. The vast aesthetic and intellectual references have created an  intensely coded body of work giving shape to complex experiences of colonialism, memory, and diaspora. These influences rendered in large scale oil and acrylic compositions lay the relationship between artistic practice and politics, where paintings can transport viewers through spatial and temporal layers toward envisioning new ways of seeing.

Lil Space Garbage (Basurita Espacial) presents a narrative engaging with the wonder of interplanetary spectacle and the reality of human’s impact on our planet and beyond. The soft movement of the waving mushrooms reach into the canvas toward the depth of the cobalt sky. Growing out of the land, the mushrooms raised in wonder at the luminous anomaly shooting across the sky, these shooting stars represent the duality of natural phenomena and how man-made debris and waste can take seemingly identical shapes. The artist will hand-embellish the editions by adding light and shade with both airbrushed and acrylic environmental details in the sky and foliage, making each print a unique work.
