Sarah Lee (born 1988 in Seoul) is an artist based in New York City. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011 and her MFA from the same institution in 2017. Additionally, Lee studied painting at Seoul National University in 2014. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries including PMAM in London, 1969 Gallery in New York, Bill Brady in Los Angeles, Anat Ebgi in Los Angeles, Carl Kostyal in Milan, ATM Gallery in New York, and Galerie Hussenot in Paris.

Moon and a Star depicts a nocturnal forest scene illuminated by a full, bright moon. Bathed in blue and purple hues, the trees cast shadows across a curvilinear ground that glows against the mysterious darkness. A star hangs oddly off a blushed tree branch as though it were a Christmas tree ornament, inviting viewers to speculate on what might have occurred within this imagined world. For the series, Lee has hand-embellished all of prints with soft pastel and colored pencils, to further accentuate certain details such as the titular moon and star.

Of this initiative to benefit NAMI, the artist notes, “It is important to donate to NAMI, because my art practice is closely related to mental health issues. Since I was young, I’ve tended to enjoy and look forward to dark stormy days. I kept it as a secret because I didn’t want to be seen as a creepy person. One night, I realized that ‘bad’ weather makes me feel safe and protected. It reminded me that the world is made up of forces bigger than me, and that the troubles that cause me anxiety are relatively small. It was a moment of relief that I’d never forget.”
