Grace Lynne Haynes is a visual artist and educator whose compositions and sculptures shift fluidly between fantasy and reality. Born in Los Angeles and currently based in Brooklyn, the artist explores how the process of world building can become a zone of creative and cultural liberation. Known for her bold palettes and mystic forms, Haynes utilizes the imaginative strategies of science fiction and Afrofuturism to envision alternate futures for people of African descent. She has exhibited internationally, notably at the Biennale De Dakar in 2020, and participated in the inaugural cohorts of the Black Rock Senegal and Powerhouse Arts residency programs. Additionally, her work is in the public collections of the Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; Bunker Artspace, West Palm Beach, FL; California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA; and the X Museum, Beijing, China. 

There Seems No Doubt portrays a recurring female figure who serves as the protagonist in an ever unfolding narrative. The archetypal character’s skin is rendered pitch black, as an intentional expression of the color’s fullness, presence, mystery, and opacity. Influenced by symbolic traditions that include the abstraction of the human form in West African masks and the use of the side profile in ancient Egyptian art, Haynes points her subject face towards the left, partially obscuring her facial features from the viewer. The artist notes, “Lately, I’ve been thinking deeply about costume, wings, portals, and environments as parts of this larger visual cosmology I’m creating. I am interested in images that feel familiar enough to enter, but strange enough that they suggest another world operating just beyond our own.” For this limited edition series, Haynes will hand embellish twelve prints with unique elements that build on her speculative world.

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support global reforestation, she adds, “Nature has always been an important visual and conceptual part in my work. Even when my environments are speculative or otherworldly, they are often filled with plants, marine forms, natural structures, and imagined ecosystems. Supporting global reforestation feels aligned with my interest because forests are not only vital ecological systems, but also places of memory, abundance, and possibility. I think a lot about the kinds of worlds we are building and what we are leaving behind for future generations. Supporting reforestation is one tangible way of contributing to a future that is more sustainable and alive.”
