Alissa McKendricks enigmatic, semi-narrative scenes depict female figures against fields awash with emotive color and wispy details. Her subjects hover between the whimsical and the macabre, with a lightness of form and color that merge dreams with nightmares. Her painterly touch and buoyant playfulness bely her vaguely ominous subject matter. The artist attended Rhode Island School of Design and has had solo exhibitions at Collaborations, Copenhagen, Denmark; Team Gallery, New York, NY; Real Fine Arts; Brooklyn, NY; and de boer, Los Angeles, CA.

Untitled is one of several skateboarding- themed works the artist has composed over the past year. Transcending textural expectations of the medium, the work is animated by a tension between drawing and painting, with lithe, sketchy lines contouring lively washes of ocean blues, pinks and greens. Cool splashes of blue and white in the foreground echo the zoetic waves rocking under the sailboat in the background—a quiet, yet jovial play with scale and color.  The splashing hand is captured through negative space, light detailing adds a sprightly specificity to the atmospheric, sweeping layers of color. The artist has hand-embellished the edition with gouache details and images in the landscape and figure, making each print a unique work.
