Danielle Orchard (b. 1985, Michigan City, IN) is a Brooklyn-based artist exploring feminine corporeal realities and narrative forms through quiet, architectural compositions. Orchard holds a BFA in Painting from Indiana University and an MFA in Painting from CUNY Hunter College. Recent exhibitions include At the Seams at Galerie Perrotin (Seoul, KR); A Face for Every Season at Half Gallery (Los Angeles, CA); and Mother’s Magazines at Jack Hanley Gallery (New York, NY) amongst others. Her work has been featured in a number of publications including the cover of the Fall 2022 Paris Review, Artnet, The Cut, Flash Art, i-D, Juxtapoz Magazine, the New York Times, and The New Yorker, among others.

Danielle Orchard subverts female nudes in an analytic, cubist style equal parts contemporary and classical—engaging with the visual language of modernist masters like Picasso and Matisse. In Earthly Demands, the artist’s third collaboration with ART FOR CHANGE, sparkling details in the muted composition complement the textural washes that bleed down the composition. Rich cyan tights with a tear in the knee shine in harmony with the tinges of topaz highlighting her ribcage and twinkling between her fingers. Staring out of the window, the subject’s emotive expression is lit by the glimmering red candle light, yet her reflection in the mirror creates an almost vacuous sense of distance between both the viewer and self as subject.
