Erin M. Riley crafts meticulous, large-scale tapestries depicting intimate, erotic, and psychologically raw imagery. Using a floor loom, traditional techniques, and hand-dyed wool yarn, the Brooklyn-based artist combine collaged elements—drawn from personal photographs, images sourced from the internet, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera—as a way of reflecting upon relationships, memories, fantasies, and trauma. Riley’s work has been exhibited around the world, and has been acquired into the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, NY, and the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum of Art at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, among others. In 2021, she also received a United States Artists Fellowship Grant, as well as an American Academy of Arts & Letters Art Purchase Prize.

In Disappearing Messages, Riley appears as a figure who rests atop an oval kitchen floor rug that mimics both an ordinary, decorative object and an outdoor park ground. The otherwise domestic scene bears a psychedelic tone, in that the portrayed artist has four arms—two of which grasp a communion cake from her own youth, while another wields an orange piece of sidewalk chalk. Meanwhile, a fuschia flower is centered on the raised soles of Riley’s feet, evoking femininity and sexuality. Regarding her artistic practice, she notes, “My work is about generational trauma, the search for self identity both online and within relationships, and how our experiences affect the way we move through the world. I aim to use autobiographical elements with broader language and imagery to translate universal experiences.”

Of ART FOR CHANGE’s initiative to support the Brooklyn Museum, Riley adds, “The Brooklyn Museum has supported my work by showing it in the Brooklyn Artists Exhibition and, more recently, by adding it to their collection. I am honored to be a part of such an incredible legacy, and am proud to do what I can to support their exhibitions and programs.”
