Devin Osorio, Alza la Oreja Hacia Dios, 2022; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print
Devin Osorio (b. 1993, Washington Heights, NY) is a first-generation Dominican American. They find inspiration from the strong cultural and socioeconomic diversity in the predominantly Dominican neighborhood. Using shared and self-reflective symbolism, Osorio honors Dominican culture through shrine-like paintings that incorporate plants, animals and glyphs to create a visual vernacular of and for the Dominican American community. Their work has been exhibited in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Madrid. Osorio earned a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design.
Alza La Oreja Hacia Dios is inspired by a game the artist played with their uncle Jesus when they were younger, who would ask the artist if they wanted to see god, and then tug on the child’s ears, pulling them upwards. Here, Devin is pulled up and out of their home, floating above what to them, represents their entire world; their Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City and their great grandmother’s ancestral home in the small, Dominican town of El Desvio de Caobanico, in San Jose de las Matas. With vibrant colors and flat, animated figures, the artist nods to Hindu mythology, ritual, and the extraordinary within the surreal, layered composition. The artist has hand-embellished the edition with acrylic details making each print a unique work.

“When I was a child, I came across Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach and for the first time saw my community and myself depicted in something important—a book, thus making me feel as though I was important as well,” says Osorio on the collaboration. “Organizations like ICI support and cultivate organic displays of curatorial dialogue, like Tar Beach, inspiring the lives of a great diversity of underserved and underrepresented children who are now able to witness the potential of their futures.”
ART FOR CHANGE will donate a portion of proceeds from each print sold to Independent Curators International in support of the organization’s initiatives creating strong art communities through experimentation, collaboration, and international engagement.
