Anna Park makes charcoal drawings that portray the turbulent and frenzied experience of contemporary life. Drawing upon her own personal, immigrant experience as well as visual references that range from Cubism to graphic novels, her dynamic compositions—formed through an intuitive process of improvised mark-making—articulate ideas of femininity, gender archetypes, and power dynamics. Born in South Korea and based in Brooklyn, Park has presented solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, Australia, and SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, GA. Additionally, her work is held in numerous public collections, including those of the High Museum of Art, Atalanta, GA; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong, China; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and the Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL.

Happy Hour depicts a female figure, who turns back towards the viewer while raising her skirt to reveal her bottom. A mischievous grin stretches across her face, mirrored by the clockhands superimposed over the circular composition. Both playful and provocative, the work considers the ways in which female bodies are scrutinized. Rather than expressing embarrassment or vulnerability, Park’s character meets the viewer's gaze with joy and confidence, asserting her agency in the face of these expectations. The artist explains, "I wanted to depict the ever-present notion of time that women are confronted with daily, whether through media depictions or the idea that one's value is associated with youth. While all of these pressures exist, no one can escape the passage of time." For this limited edition series, Park will embellish twenty prints with unique clock hands and pairs of shoes—each hand-cut, sculpted from papier-mâché, and painted before being applied to the surface.

All of the opportunities offered to students by Free Arts NYC makes me hopeful for the future.”
