Nicasio Fernandez’s figurative paintings, which often depict solitary, contorted figures, teeter between the familiar and the foreign. Charged with heightened emotional tension, his works explore the psychological and physical endurances embedded within contemporary life. Born in Yonkers, NY and currently based in Mahopac, NY, the artist received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts, and has presented solo exhibitions at venues that include Harper’s, Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, and East Hampton, NY; Half Gallery, New York, NY; Ross + Kramer Gallery, New York, NY, and East Hampton, NY; and Over The Influence, Los Angeles, CA. Additionally, his work can be found in the collection of the Hall Art Foundation, North Adams, MA.

In Morph, a subdued lavender mist rolls into an eerie forest, while a lone figure sits atop a tree stump. The primary character gazes intently at a butterfly that has landed upon its skeletal hand, while pinching the stem of a freshly plucked, yet wilting, flower. Rendered with orange skin and exaggerated features, the pensive figure appears neither human nor animal. These surrealistic elements each suggest an internal metamorphosis, symbolizing the ever-evolving processes of growth, change, death, and rebirth that are central to one’s experience. For this limited edition series, Fernandez will hand-embellish the prints by using acrylic paint and colored pencil to alter certain aspects of the image, rendering each work unique.
