Jordan Kasey is known for paintings and drawings that zero in on human characters whose bodies—colorful and exaggerated in scale—occupy otherworldly scenes. Typically portrayed from a close-up view, these anonymous figures often appear to be ensconced in introspective contemplation. Born in Chicago, IL and based in Brooklyn, NY, the artist has presented solo and two-person exhibitions at venues that include Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York, NY; Juen Juen Gung, Hong Kong, China; and Signal Gallery, Brooklyn, NY. Additionally, she has exhibited work at Kaufmann Repetto, Milan, Italy; Loyal Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden; Carl Kostyál Gallery, Malmö, Sweden; MoMA PS1, Queens, NY; and White Cube, London, United Kingdom; among others. Kasey’s work can be found in the Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Italy, and the Zabludowicz Collection, London, United Kingdom.
Push, Pull stems from a recent body of paintings in which the artist explores the nuanced relationship between parent and child. A cherub-like infant is held up by a woman whose features are partially obscured by the compositional crop. The child grasps a tuft of the mother’s yellow, greenish hair with a clenched fist, while resting his other hand on the corner of her lips as though to push her face away. A pink light casts onto the duo, who peer towards the right in unison. Intimate yet somehow alienating, the work highlights the tensions, as well as unconditional love, that define motherhood. For this limited edition series, Kasey will hand-embellish the prints by adding roughly-applied areas of black acrylic paint, as a way of inviting light to play upon the print’s surface while also emphasizing the separation between the figures and the wall behind them.

Of this series, the artist notes, “I'm honored to have this opportunity to help support When We All Vote. With so much at stake in our country and our world, we need as many voices as possible to be heard. In this image, I explore the intimacy and complexity of the relationship between a new mother and her child. For me, among the many life-altering experiences of motherhood has been an increasingly acute sense of concern for the future and safety of the next generation. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way, and we can only hope that our votes can make a difference.”
ART FOR CHANGE will donate five percent of the unframed purchase price of sales through December 1st, with a $10,000 minimum commitment, to support When We All Vote’s mission to increase voter participation in this crucial election year.
