Alec Egan, Flowers on Flowers, 2021; Hand-Embellished, Signed, and Numbered Limited Edition Print, Framed in Gray Wood
Los Angeles-based artist Alec Egan’s thick impastoed paintings portray strikingly banal interior scenes that are premised on a fictitious memory. His works offer intentional plays on the tropes of domesticity, existentialism, and nostalgia, honing in on mundane objects with devoted repetition. A MFA Graduate from Otis College of Art and Design, Egan has presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Anat Egbi, Los Angeles; MAKI Gallery, Tokyo; the Dubuque Museum of Art, Dubuque; and the California Heritage Museum, Los Angeles. Additionally, his works can be found in the public collections of Berlin’s Saunders Collection and London’s Key Brand Entertainment.
Since 2017, Egan’s practice has focused on creating oil paintings of the interior of a singular imagined house. Within these works, patterns inspired by disparate sources—from Victorian wallpapers to vintage Laura Ashley upholsteries—are layered atop one another in cacophonous displays. True to its title, Flowers on Flowers is a maximalist homage that features a colorful arrangement in a vase, positioned before a similarly patterned floral backdrop. As in the still life paintings of past art historical movements, the artist’s flowers connote a range of meanings, such as new life, love and fragility. Although this series of paintings has been ongoing, the recent quarantine at home has cast a new light on his meditations on the domestic. The artist will hand embellish 10 prints with pastels or oil sticks to create unique works.
Of this series, the artist notes, “The charity is so important to me, because mental illness is an epidemic in our world and, a lot of the time, an invisible one. It affects my family and many others directly. Through my experience helping people I love through the bewildering process of diagnosis and treatment, I realize how little is known about how to help someone in need. Organizations like NAMI build essential bridges between those in need and those that are willing to help through education and awareness. They are incredibly important in the fight to understand and to treat mental illness on both the micro and macro level.”
Of the total net proceeds from sales of this print, 20% will benefit NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and, as with all ART FOR CHANGE initiatives, the artist receives 50%.
