Emily Weiner filters Jungian symbolism through a feminist lens, while investigating how stories are shared across generations. The artist considers the theater to be a space parallel to that of a painting, as both allow action and attention to be manipulated beyond the rational constraints of our physical world. Typically set within ceramic or mixed media frames, her paintings question how archetypal images have been passed down throughout the history of art, and how familiar symbols might be reordered to generate new, collective understanding. Born in Brooklyn, NY and based in Nashville, TN, Weiner has presented solo exhibitions at KÖNIG GALERIE, Berlin, Germany; Red Arrow Gallery, Nashville, TN; Entrée, Bergen, Norway; and Huxley-Parlour, London, United Kingdom; among others. Additionally, her paintings are included in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, PA, and Kunsthall Grenland, Porsgrunn, Norway.
In Confluence, a pair of symmetrical curtain panels frame a gradient sky distinguished by a celestial body that resides singularly at the center of the composition. Typically interpreted as a moon, this circular motif recurs throughout most of Weiner’s paintings, intended as a reference to the notion of eternal return. Meanwhile, the curtains harken back to the theater stages that inspire the artist, while signifying the unveiling of common perception. For this limited edition series, the artist has hand-embellished each print by adding a gouache vermillion moon and a constellation of stars—the latter of which is varied in placement and color temperature.
Regarding this philanthropic initiative of planting ten trees for every print sold, the artist notes, “Ecology has been at the forefront of my mind since my youth, spent mostly playing in a reservation of woodland behind my childhood home in New Jersey. In college, I studied Environmental Science alongside Art History, so the two are inextricably tied! Moving to Tennessee after nearly two decades in the city, I have been able to plant a tree on each Mother’s Day. The first tree was planted five years ago, and it now provides flowers for pollinators, branches for birds, and backyard shade from the summer heat. The impact of ART FOR CHANGE’s amazing initiative is immediate, and will continue to grow over time.”
